Lake Placid Registrtation
by posted 08/26/2010

NEW this year: LAKE PLACID FORMS will be COLLECTED AT TRYOUTS

Once again as a program we will be sending most of our travel teams to the Can-Am Tournament in Lake Placid this year.  The tournament takes place over the November 4 to 7th weekend.  We will be staying again at the Hilton High Peaks Resort.  Despite the fact we may once again end up playing against other CHC teams while there, the Hockey Policy Committee feels the benefits of going as a whole program, as opposed to splitting up and going different weekends, outweighs who some of our competitors may be.  Each year this trip has been a highlight for our players and parents.  All boys’ teams EXCEPT for Mite B and Squirt C will be attending the tournament.

Please find instructions below for tournament paperwork to be turned in during tryouts.

Step 1: How to Find & Print pages:

1.      On NCWC homepage, click on ‘Documents’ tab in left column.

2.      Next, click on ‘+Travel Hockey’ and drop down menu of documents will appear.

3.      Click on ‘2010 Lake Placid Family Forms.’

·         Print 1 copy ‘Family Reservation & Payment Form’ per family.

·         Print ‘PLAYER INFO & WAIVER FORM’ for EACH PLAYER trying out for a travel hockey.

4.      For Lake Placid Guidelines, Rates, & Essay Contest, click on ‘2010 Lake Placid Rates.’  These pages are for your information, please read… printing is optional, nothing to return.

Step 2: Fill Out Forms:

1.      ‘FAMILY RESERVATION & PAYMENT FORM’ needs to be filled out (1 per family), including a credit card # and 3 digit security code.  This card will charge the balance of the room cost 30 days prior to the tournament date.

·         IMPORTANT: If you need two or more rooms, please indicate on the line ‘ROOM REQUESTS’ that you need two rooms.  Also write out which team you prefer to stay with.*

2.      With ‘Family Reservation & Payment Form,’ please include a $200 check (per room reservation) payable to NCWC to reimburse the club for the deposit of your room. (Room deposits were already made by the NCWC to hold the rooms.)  The $200 deposit will be applied to total room costs.

·         IMPORTANT: Please write a separate $200 deposit check for EACH room reserved.**

3.      ‘PLAYER INFORMATION & WAIVER FORM’ needs to be filled out for EACH travel hockey player trying out for a team.

·         *There will be some information that you will not be able to fill out in the first section, Team Information.  Leave blank… we will fill in this information after tryouts.

·         SOMEWHERE ON TOP OF FORM: Please write out the level your player is trying out for: Bantam, PeeWee, Squirt, or Mite.

·         IMPORTANT: Make sure waiver is sign by PLAYER as well as PARENT.

Step 3: Return Lake Placid Forms Options:

1.      Volunteers will collect all forms at tryouts on Sept. 10th, 11th and 12th.

2.      If you prefer to check it off your ‘to do’ list now, you can mail it prior to Sept. 10th to: Alicia Hart, 540 Frogtown Road, New Canaan, CT 06840  Attn: Lake Placid

FAQs:

1.      Do all Winter Club travel hockey teams go to Lake Placid? All of the boys travel teams except for Mite B and Squirt C attend the tournament.

2.      When is the tournament game schedule posted?  Usually not until 7 days before the tournament.

3.      *What if I request two rooms but I’m not sure which team to room with? At this point, pick one team level and after tryouts, we will contact all families requesting more than one room to confirm which team they will room with.

4.      Do I need to send a deposit check for each room I reserve? Yes, $200 deposit check per room, payable to NCWC. **PLEASE WRITE A SEPARATE CHECK for each room reserved… this helps with any room cancellations down the line.

5.      Can I put the $200 deposit on my credit card? No, the $200 deposit must be in the form of a check and payable to NCWC.  The credit card will be used by the hotel for the remainder of balance due.

6.      What is the cost per room this year? Please see the rate sheet which can be found in the ‘2010 Lake Placid Rates’ documents on the NCWC website...2nd page.  The cost will be from the GOLD Package with an additional surcharge of $50 per night at the High Peaks Hotel (formerly Hilton).  Since the High Peaks is no longer affiliated with the CAN/AM tournament, this is an agreement between High Peaks Hotel and the New Canaan Winter Club.

7.      When I am filling out my credit card information it asks me for ‘Amount Enclosed or To Be Charged…’ what do I fill in?  Leave it blank or fill it in if you want to calculate your costs.  Your credit card will automatically be charged the balance due 30 days prior to tournament.  PLEASE REMEMBER TO INCLUDE 3 DIGIT SECURITY CODE when filling out credit card information.

8.      What if my child doesn’t make a travel team? We will return all paperwork and checks after tryouts.

9.      What if one child makes a travel team but another doesn’t? We will return all paperwork for the child that doesn’t make a team.  We will also contact you to update status of  # of people in the room & make adjustments if you requested more than one room.

If you have any further questions, please contact Alicia Hart at . Thank you!

Travel Hockey Registration
by posted 08/16/2010

The deadline of August 15, 2010 for registration for Travel Hockey has passed.  However, it is not too late to register your skater(s) for travel hockey but a $75 late fee will be charged.

*** Please note that all
past due accounts must be paid before your skater(s) will be allowed to compete in any of the tryouts on September 10, 11, and 12. ***

Please follow the following seven (7) stepsto register your travel hockey playersfor both General Registration and their respective Travel Hockey programs at the New Canaan Winter Club.  This process looks more intimidating than it really is and the following steps have been provided to make the process an easier one for you.  Please follow these steps precisely as they will save all of us a lot of time.

  1. Go to www.usahockeyregistration.com and register eachhockey player/coach in your family with USA Hockey that will be playing Travel Hockey.  Please make sure you register your player(s) as "Ice Players" versus “Inline” players.
  2. Please print out the USA Hockey registration confirmation (complete with number and barcode).  A copy of the USA Hockey Confirmation (one per player) must be mailed to Bill Glover, NCWC Registrar (address is listed below) in order to register for all travel hockey at the Winter Club.  Write down your USA Hockey confirmation number for each child and keep this information available for completing Step 7 in the Winter Club’s registration process.  You will need to pay the $40/player USA Hockey registration fee (Including $10 for the CHC) via credit card.  Children under the age of 6 are free but they must still be registered.
  3. Please print out and complete the USA Hockey Consent To Treat/Medical History form (one per player) that is found on the Documents tab on the home page of the NCWC website.
  4. Please print out and complete the NCWC Consent To Treat and Waiver of Liability form (one per family), which is found on the Documents tab on the home page of the NCWC website.  For the purposes of Travel Hockey registration, this document will be sent to Bill Glover instead of Cricket Benevento.  Bill will pass along this form to Cricket.
  5. Mail all Documents from Steps 1-4 to:  Bill Glover NCWC Registrar 39 Runningbrook Lane New Canaan, CT 06840
  6. Register all family members for General Registration 2010-2011, who intend to skate at the Winter Club at anytime during the season, including general skating.  Please follow these following steps:
  • Go to www.ncwinterclub.com
  • Click on Register Online on the left column.
  • Click the 2010-2011 General Registration button.
  • Log in by entering email address and your password; if you do not remember your   password, then just type in your email address and hit submit.  Your password will be automatically sent to your email address.  PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE REGISTERING BY USING THE EMAIL ADDRESS THAT YOU SENT TO THE WINTER CLUB’S REGISTRAR WHEN YOU FIRST JOINED THE CLUB.  DO NOT REGISTER USING A NEW EMAIL ADDRESS UNLESS THE WINTER CLUB HAS BEEN NOTIFIED ABOUT YOUR NEW ADDRESS AND HAS IT ON FILE AS YOUR PRIMARY EMAIL ACCOUNT.
  • Register the parents first as your information will automatically transfer to your children’s account information.  Click on each family member's name that you need to register and follow instructions for completing the Emergency Contact information, Code of Conduct, and Club Agreement & Consent form.  When you are completing the medical information for each child, please type the word NONE in the appropriate boxes if the particular medical issue does not apply to him or her.  If you do not do this, then the system will not register your child.  Please repeat this step again for each family member if you have not done so already.  You do not need to print out anything as you have already completed the required documentation for Cricket Benevento in Step 4.
  • Please verify that each family member has been successfully registered by seeing that 2010-2011 General Registration is listed next to or underneath each child’s name.
7.  Finally, you need to register all skaters for their respective Travel Hockey program (Travel Hockey Mites, Travel Hockey Squirts, Travel Hockey PeeWees, or Travel Hockey Bantams), who intend to skate in this program at the Winter Club.  Please follow these following steps:
  • Click on Register Online on the left column.
  • Click on your child’s respective link: Travel Hockey Mites, Travel Hockey Squirts, Travel Hockey PeeWees, or Travel Hockey Bantams.
  • Click on your child's name that you need to register for each respective Travel Hockey program.
  • Enter your child’s USA Hockey registration number.
  • Double check the information and click submit.  Once you click submit, your child will be registered for Travel Hockey.
You are finished with the entire registration process and an automatic email will be sent to you and the Winter Club administrator that indicates your registration was successful.  Registration for all other Winter Clubs programs (JHL, SHL, Figure Skating, etc…) will be announced at later dates.

2010 NCWC HPC Letter
by posted 06/30/2010

The New Canaan Winter Club
2010-11 NCWC TRAVEL HOCKEY

DEAR WINTER CLUB HOCKEY FAMILIES,

I know that it is hard to focus on hockey in the summer, but I wanted to update everyone on where the Hockey Policy Committee (“HPC”) stands right now in regards to the 2010-11 travel hockey season.  We have been very fortunate as a hockey program to have had Jeff Growney running the HPC for the past 3 years.  As Jeff’s youngest child has almost aged out of the Winter Club, he will return for his final season on the HPC.  We will serve as co-chairmen of HPC this year.  Jeff is lending a tremendous amount of experience to me as I try to get my feet on the ground.  In fact, I will borrow Jeff’s format from previous June letters. Specifically, this letter will address the following issues:

I.    Composition of the New Canaan Winter Club Hockey Policy Committee (“HPC”).
II.   Connecticut Hockey Conference (“CHC”)
III. Developments.
IV. Projected NCWC 2010-2011 travel teams.
V.  Anticipated coaches for the 2010-2011 season.
VI. Registration information.
VII. Tryout dates and times.

I.             HPC
Current HPC members are David Tohir, Chris Robustelli, Bill Glover, Pat O’Connell and Co-Chairmen, Jeff Growney & Ian Hobbs.  Additionally, Tom Crystal has joined the committee and will focus on the Junior House League program in addition to the overall program.  Rob Rohn will be leaving HPC after many years of dedicated service.  We would like to thank Rob for all of his time and input during his years on HPC.  He was a great member of the committee and his insight will be missed.

II.            CHC
The Winter Club will continue to approach our level of play the same way that we have since the CHC went to a self declared Tier System.  For the most part, our A teams will play Tier 2 and our B teams will play Tier 4.  The one exception this year is that our Peewee A team will play in Tier 3.   We will also move our Bantam A team back to Tier 2 after a season at Tier 3.  Unlike a few programs in our area, NCWC is very clear about what we want to be as a hockey organization.  While a few of our A teams may be able to compete against some of the best teams in Connecticut, we are not a Tier 1 program playing 60-70 games as opposed to the 40-50 that most Winter Club teams play.  Additionally, we play the vast majority of our games within an hour drive of  New Canaan as opposed to travelling between Boston and Washington.  We hope that this makes sense to everyone and sets a level of expectation.

One new directive from the CHC and USA Hockey is at the Mite level.  This year all Mite travel teams will be required to start their seasons playing a minimum number of cross ice games.  Our Mite coaches are working on the most effective way to implement this policy and will communicate our approach to the involved families as the season gets underway.

III.        Developments

Last season in response to the demand of the membership, the HPC brought in a Director of Hockey to oversee the travel hockey program.  Our feeling and based on input from the membership is that having a Director of Hockey is not entirely necessary and can yield mixed results.  One of the best consequences  from having one last year was that it clearly focused our hockey program on our strong coaching roster.  So rather than retain a Director of Hockey in 2010-11, we have focused on building the strongest stable of coaches possible.  In most cases, this meant retaining many of our coaches from last season.  We reassigned/promoted some coaches to different levels and more prominent roles.  One big change in philosophy this season is that we are going to get away from almost exclusively bringing in hired coaches.  The reality is that the Winter Club has a tremendous wealth of talent in its membership and we have tried to utilize these members as coaches.  In our opinion, these parent coaches approach the game with the proper attitude of taking it seriously, but keeping it fun and in perspective.  By combining our best professional and parent coaches, we feel we assembled one of the finest coaching staffs in the area.   Due to the fact that we have such a strong group of coaches, the decision was made to eliminate the Director of Hockey position this season and reallocate resources with an initial goal of bringing in more assistant coaches, purchasing more ice time if available for skill work, and adding goalie coaches.

In addition to focusing on our team coaches, the HPC realizes that an organization’s goalie development program will drive the success of any program.  We are in the process of recruiting several goalie coaches to work with and develop our goaltenders.  We believe that teams often live and die with the development of their goalies, so we are committed to bringing in strong goalie coaches.  If anyone has any suggestions or recommendations of top flight goalie coaches who would be interested in helping out at NCWC, please feel free to e-mail .

One area that we are hoping to develop this year is to increase the number of voluntary skills sessions.  We are still working on the best way to accomplish this, but we do want to provide as many opportunities for players to work on improving their game as possible.  We are still working on the details of how to best accomplish this, but we believe that it is an important area to focus.
Tryouts and politics are an issue that every program has to deal with.  The HPC is committed to making the tryouts as fair a process as possible.  We are currently trying to bring in outside evaluators to lead the team selection process.

I hope that everyone is aware of the success of our girls team joint venture with Darien. Nicknamed the Connecticut Ice Cats, they have embraced the fine qualities of both the NCWC and DYHA programs for the benefit of girls hockey.  Last year our U12 team went to the National Championship tournament in Michigan.  We completed tryouts this past April for the U12 and U14 teams and the season is set up to be a success for both age groups.  We will again have a U12 A team, U12 B team and a U14 A team. We have a strong group of members involved with the leadership of this program and they continue to make sure that the Winter Club is treated fairly within this relationship. Last year our efforts were led by Janet Defrino, Jeff Growney and Ellen Oppenheim. At this time, we would like to thank Ellen for all she has done for the Winter Club and the Girls Program specifically. She has been a relentless recruiter and organizer and she will be missed as her youngest goes off to Taft. This year our girls program will be led by Janet Defrino, Jeff Growney and Jed Stevens. Please feel free to approach any of them if you have any questions regarding the Girls teams.

We once again are anticipating holding two or three pre-tryout skates for all age groups over Labor Day weekend.  Tryouts will be held the weekend after Labor Day from September 10th to September 12th.

If you have any questions regarding these or any other changes please feel free to contact any of the HPC members.

IV.          Projected NCWC 2010-2011 travel teams
We anticipate fielding the following teams for the upcoming season, based on the current team census information which has been communicated to us from the membership. Please take note that this is subject to change based on the actual numbers that tryout in September. Accordingly, it is imperative that you register in time and communicate your intention to participate in tryouts this September, as your decision will affect not just your family, but also the rest of the families at your child’s respective level.

Two Mite teams (for birth years 2002 and younger)
Three Squirt teams (for birth years 2000 and 2001)
Two Pee Wee teams (for birth years 1998 and 1999)
Two Bantam teams (for birth years 1996 and 1997)

When a player accepts a position on a travel team, he/she is expected to participate fully in practices, games and tournaments.  State and other tournaments have traditionally fallen over both the public and private school breaks.  While fall sports may present some conflicts, a strong commitment is essential to the program’s success.  Please keep in mind the NCWC also offers a house program for those who feel uncomfortable with this level of commitment.

V.         Anticipated Coaches for the 2010-2011 season
In an effort to inform to the best or our ability, we are listing our anticipated coaching line-up.  Some of these are still tentative and could change prior to the season beginning.  We will also be bringing in several more assistant coaches to help out on various teams.

Mite A :                 Colin Ives & Hank Lammens
Mite B.                   Rob Benson & Jason Rayher
Squirt A:                Ken Gammill, Jed Stevens, & Marco Magliulo
Squirt B:                Corey Gammill & Ryan Brown
Squirt C:                Colin Odneal & Bill McKeown
Peewee A:             Scott Linde & Clark Jones
Peewee B:              Bobby Cintolo, Dan Sparks, & Pat O’Connell
Bantam A:             Chris Gerwig & Keith McElaney
Bantam B:             Scott McNiven & Assistants TBD
